What is NIPS (Network Intrusion Prevention System)?

A Network Intrusion Prevention System (NIPS) is a security tool designed to monitor and protect a network from unauthorized access and malicious activities. NIPS not only detects threats but also takes immediate action to prevent attacks like denial of service (DoS) and malware intrusions from causing damage.

What is Network Intrusion?

Network intrusion refers to any unauthorized activity that compromises a network's security. These intrusions can steal valuable resources, disrupt network operations, and compromise sensitive data. Organizations must use systems like NIPS to detect and respond to these threats quickly.

Attackers use multiple paths to access a network, making it harder for security systems to detect them.

Hackers try to overload a system’s memory with malicious data, causing the network to crash or become vulnerable.

Exploiting web server interfaces to gain access to secure files.

Hackers exploit weaknesses in network protocols (such as IP and ICMP) to access data or crash systems.

  1. Overloading a network with traffic to distract security systems while launching an attack.

These programs look harmless but open a backdoor for attackers to access the network.

How NIPS Works

NIPS uses various detection techniques to monitor network traffic for malicious activity. Once a threat is detected, NIPS takes immediate action by blocking the source of the attack or stopping suspicious traffic.

NIPS typically employs these three detection methods:

  • Signature-Based Detection: Matches known attack patterns with network traffic.
  • Anomaly Detection: Compares current network behavior to expected patterns and flags any unusual activity.

Protocol State Analysis: Monitors network protocols for deviations from normal behavior.
